Port Augusta Racecourse

Port Augusta Racecourse is located at the head of the Spencer Gulf and is the apex of the triangle formed by the three Northern cities of Port Pirie, Port Augusta and Whyalla.

The Port Augusta Racing Club was formed in late 1881 when the Port Augusta and Flinders Jockey Club was inaugurated. It has operated continuously apart from periods during the two world wars. It has become a tradition to hold an annual big race meeting where visitors stay in Port Augusta for a week or more.

The Port Augusta Cup is still held annually in July.

Port Augusta Racecourse has a sand track that is comprised of three different grades of sand with either oil or water used as a binding agent.

The course is 2,100 metres in circumference and has a 400 metre long chute that joins the course proper at the 1,200 metre start.
